GA Paddling

Hello - I am new to GA and would love to take an overnight paddling trip. I don't have a canoe so I'll need to find a place that rents and offers shuttles. I'm looking for remote, quiet, good places to camp and a good introduction to the GA outdoors. Any suggestions?

  • Try the "places to paddle"
I've never paddled in Georgia, but I've had good luck finding places to go using the "Places to Paddle" feature under the "Go Paddling" tab at the top of this page. Try:

  • Saint Marys
I've had my eye on the stretch of the Saint Mary's from Traders Hill to north of Macclenny FL for a while now. Recent rains may have brought the level up - from what I've heard they have been very low. This stretch is very remote with only a couple of accesses. Russel at Traders Hill is a good contact: (912)276-0576.

    kayak camping
I take a couple of overnight trips a year. Usually one big (5 days) trip. We supply our own kayaks, gear and shuttles. I don't know if this is something you would be interested in but if so, let me know.
  • Post in haste, repent at leisure.
I don't think the Chattooga can be called a "water trail" in any common sense of the terms. There are some serious errors on the map.

As for the Toccoa, again the map just does not depict reality very well.

Folks would be well-advised to buy a copy of "A Canoeing and Kayaking Guide to Georgia" by Suzanne Wielander et al. Most of the maps are more accurate, and there is useful, even essential description of these runs.

I've personally explored and described many runs in Georgia, and I base my recommendation on that experience.
  • You might try Broad River Outpost.
they have connections both in their piedmont operation and down on the Altamaha near Darien.
