Tips. Well, I'm not an angler, but I'm definitely an avid winter paddler of my kayak in SW Ontario, Canada. I've been called "crazy" before, breaking through the thin shore ice to get out to open water, but with proper gear, skills, and knowledge it's safer than a lot of other activities.
It looks like you're just south of my own latitude, so I'll assume similar winters. Immersion protection is everything. Dressing for near freezing water isn't easy, nor is it inexpensive. Have you given this some thought?
Did you catch this recent thread debating whether a wet suit was enough for cold water paddling? There are some good resources if you read through it.
