Review of the MIdwest Canoe Symposium

We recently received this review of the Midwest Canoe Symposium, held this past September. It is representative of what takes place at our other events in the Adirondacks, Wisconsin and the New Jersey Pine Barrens.

  • Do freestyle canoeists capsize much when just starting out?

  • A pretty good read. At first, I had no idea what a freestyle canoeist was, until I watched this video:

Quoting the author "I likened it to having a paddle connected to a universal joint jerking randomly in three-dimensional disorder." ... Yup... that's how I paddle.

  • Well that brought back some sweeeet memories. Sure miss the gang. Looks like Elaine and Bob did another superlative event. All the FS events are a blast...go if you get a chance!!

That "obedience training for your canoe" is a great line. For kayaks, too.

MOrnstein posted this video a while back. I think it really highlights "obedience training" outside the performance pond. Superb boat control.

  • Overstreet....not really. Instruction teaches how to heel the hull correctly and maintain balance. On the other hand, if you’re not flyin you’re not tryin :-)

  • I can relate to going under trees.

Under, over, and, sometimes, thru trees. Very much like some of our Michigan rivers. In my case though not with such efficiency & elegance.

Last time I went through and over a tree, I had the worst case of poison ivy ever.

  • So far I've been OK. Not that there is a shortage of the evil vine on the Red Cedar & Grand Rivers.

The last time I remember getting a reaction was on the Jordan. Leaning against a bank while our group (family paddle) sorted stuff out. I'm guessing the what I thought was a root was actually a vine.
