As I sit here, looking out my northern Ohio window and watching the thermometer inch towards 70 degrees in December, I’m reminded of one thing and one thing only. It’s time to book your campsites for the 12th Annual South Bass Island Kayak Rendezvous! This year’s gathering will be our traditional weekend date, two weeks after Memorial Day, June 10-12, 2016!
Suspend your holiday shopping, ignore the kids, hang up on your spouse, stop facebooking and get off your keister and make your reservations at http://parks.ohiodnr.gov/southbassisland. It’s your civic duty as a kayaker to book out the entire state park…ha! I have my site and unless you book yours, it will be me and the Amish family from southern Ohio who mailed in their reservation (no offense if there are any Amish reading this).
For 11 years we’ve enjoyed a weekend of comradery, socializing, eating and most importantly paddling in the top island kayaking destination in Lake Erie. Last year, the group whole heartedly voted to continue offering our collectable and highly valuable SBIKR wearables and we’re already working on a design that will knock your kayaking booties off.
In addition to this being a great weekend - you, our paddlers have also been very generous to area charitable causes. We’ve raised more than $800 the past three years for Great Lakes conservation efforts and non-profit causes. I am always looking for additional items to add to our Friday Pot Luck Raffle and any contributions are appreciated.

2016 Logo Release!
The South Bass Island Kayak Rendezvous (June 10-12, 2016) T-Shirts have become a gathering tradition. I am excited to announce the logo design for 2016!
They say if you give a man a fish, he can eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime. Early in my kayaking career, I learned and understood the importance of navigation and a compass. This year’s design theme pays tribute to the simple compass. No matter where I paddle, all waterways lead me back to my Lake Erie home waters and to the SBIKR each June. For me this gathering isn’t so much about the water or islands, it’s about the lifelong friends and paddling partners I’ve met at South Bass Island. A compass will always point us in the right direction.
In 2016 we are offering two logo items. A Navy Blue short sleeve poly wicking shirt and a grey cotton hoodie. Both of these Items will be sold at cost, $10 for the poly t-shirt and $15 for the cotton hoodie. We’ll get them to the island and they will be available at the Friday night pot luck or look up Eric at site #109. Help promote the SBIKR by wearing your logo gear year round!
