2017 Spring Ozark Rendezvous Dates

Kayamedic we haven’t settled on the date yet but will let you know details when we do. I like to work it out with his wife Ginny first, just in case she can join us if only for dinner one night. We don’t use P-Net to do the planning so I’ll add you to the friends of Darryl email list! I can get to you on Facebook too.

Bob, as you’ve probably surmised from the above post, Rena and Ginny have been the organizers for this trip since its inception. I’ll, of course, pass along info as it comes to me, though it might be redundant if you’re now on Rena’s mailing list. This last year, primarily due to Anita’s wise counsel, we did the Bois Brule for this memorial paddle (instead of the Namekagon - another fine Northern River but a little less challenging than the Bois Brule) and loved it. I think you’d be especially interested in it due to its historical elements. It has been called the “River of Presidents” I’ll quote the Svob explanation of this:
"How many rivers have drawn five presidential fishermen? Only the Bois Brule can claim that distinction. Grant, Cleveland, Coolidge, Hoover, and Eisenhower have all visited this river in pursuit of trout.

During their fishing trips, the three most recent presidents were guests at nearby Cedar Island, a 4,000-acre private estate that includes many charming cedar log cabin buildings and spring lakes

Some observers maintain that the quality of the Bois Brule fishery isn’t what it used to be, but the river is still quite popular with anglers. Brookies, Rainbows and Browns reside here (especially upstream from County B near Winneboujou Landing), and coho, Chinook, pink salmon and steelheads annually migrate up the river from Lake Superior to spawn."

With some luck we, however, can safely expect not to be disturbed by a presidential fishing trip during our September paddling trip during this Presidential term. He’s just not that kind of fella and this is just not his kind of place.

I have a pretty good selection of books for you perusal as well, but that will have to wait, I suppose.

We are going cross country in July returning in Sept. Its likely we will be Johnny Appleseeding canoeing books too. We are doing the Yukon River and the Bowron Lakes so we will have a mostly flatwater Kevlar boat.
I’d really appreciate being in the loop as the Sept 16 sounds about ideal.

some of my flooded detours

Wow, Vicky. The adventure started early. Hope you made it there safely. BOB, I swiped your picture; owe you ten BOB dollahs. I’ll pay you when I see you in September. Hope those of you who mad/k/e it to the Rendezvous have wonderful paddling.

Kim, if you need a “River” boat this Fall, I’ll have the Wenonah Prospector set back up for tandem use.
The Current and Jack’s Fork will be changed with this “Historic” flood. Here’s a link to some pictures if you’re interested:

I was watching a video of the Jacks Fork this morning on the Weather Channel… Just incredible…I wonder if Alley Mill is OK.

Kim - Alley is intact, did get water in the building and the old school house. Everything is closed at least until Memorial Day - but that could change, there is a lot of damage and clean up to be done. I know they are working hard since paddling/camping season is here.

Hey, there’s more going on during a portion of Phil’s longer video than meets the eye. Between 7:25 and 7:38, that’s me on the right bank leaning against my throw rope and keeping Pam (who’s just below the next strainer) from drifting away while Brian gets to a better spot to reach her with his rope. That must be what’s going on at that moment if that’s Rob in the canoe just in front of Phil’s kayak, though I couldn’t actually see Pam in the video. Prior to that, even if the video doesn’t provide the detail to show it, the viewer can tell by the way all the boats are milling around that the left channel looked a bit dangerous as seen from upstream.

Rescue Indeed…and I would be next. Enjoyed the camera view of Phil swiping through the strainer that sent me for a swim… But the rope was in reach, tight just above the water…
Thanks to all who collected me and my equipment!

Very very nice images Tom, of places I did not see. Thank you for posting them!

Yes, thanks Tom. The pics of the boaters are well-spotted, and that goat trail looks as scary as I imagined it to be.

And Annie, I’m glad I rescued you as well. Who knows, if you hadn’t come along swimming just then, I might never have gotten my throw rope unsnagged from that submerged tree

glad I could be of assistance!

Sorry it took me so long to post my pics. Enjoy!
