To bring things full circle since I started this post. I ended up getting the Oakley Split Shot with the Prizm Deep Water Polarized lenses It comes with its own detachable leash. I have been on the water with them twice and really like them. Luckily I got them on sale at REI and I do not tend to loose sun glasses, I tend to have them for a long time.
Thanks everyone for your insights!
I ended up dropping money on a pair of wrap around prescription. Found a decent deal online and got RileyX frames with polarized, non-glare lenses for about $435. I really like them. Helps me navigate as well as helps me spot some rocks in whitewater.
Looking through comments I seen I answered in February. Lol
I need a prescription with bifocals. I have darkening glasses for my daily lenses that are glass, because plastic sessions scratch too easily (I specify UV protection. I believe window glass blocks some wavelengths of UV, but optical glass does not). I had polarized filters for camera lenses, but its not available for eyeglasses, so I get polycarbonate lenses with the polaroid coating. The advantage is that it does filter glare which can be annoying on the open water. They really help if youâre paying in clear water so you can see the bottom without interference of surface glare. The drawback is heat and age will cause the film to bubble; mine lasted about five years. Before my GPS screen became progressively darker, I had no problems viewing the screen, but now I have to look.over the top of the lenses. I donât have wrap around, which is recommended for on the water, because UV will reflect in from the side, even if it doesnât interfere with vision.
I lost a pair of prescription glasses kayaking. Since then, I use a favorite lanyard I bought at Walmart. Itâs easy to use and adjust. The end slips on and off easily and I canât feel the sleeve. They last several years, but get gunked up with sunscreen and faded, so I discard them before they stop functioning. In a pinch, you can use some thin nylon cord like the type on narrow venetian blinds (I cut the cord off old blinds because its useful).
For clarity, the photo shows the constrictor knot using cord thatâs about four times thicker than the type cord I use. A bead, or a plastic twist tie wrapped around the lanyard works to cinch up the hold. The advantage to a lanyard is that you wonât have to keep pushing the glasses back up when they slide down your nose.
