Aging gracefully behind the paddle, your thoughts?

I’ve definitely felt that gap between what my mind wants to do and what my body can handle, especially during outdoor adventures. I’ve been into hiking and kayaking for years, and I’ve had to learn to pace myself. Now, I focus on shorter trails and enjoy taking breaks to soak in the scenery instead of rushing through. Those moments in nature are special, and it’s amazing how much deeper the friendships get when you’re sharing those experiences.

And maybe get a Player Piano which plays itself when you turn it on!!!
Makes you look Cool!

I am not doing it very well.

I think you are doing the BEST that you can with the card that you have been dealt!

Hi Hatchet
Good luck to you! You wrote in Sept 2024, and now it is Jan 2025 so it has been 3 months… I hope you are feeling better and stronger. I used to play the piano many years ago, have not tried it lately but still feel the music is in my soul!

Happy New Year Ivyabby,

Thank you for asking. I lost a good bit of strength with the restrictions on activity but am getting steadily better. I never could play the piano…was just pulling the doctor’s leg. At the worst the tingling in my hands made everything feel as if it were covered with course sand paper. It’s down to about 300 grit now but hopefully will continue to improve. I’m pretty much a fair weather paddler anyhow but plan to refloat the boat when it warms up. Been working on my grip and handling the paddles should not be a problem. Today we’re having the first snow in three years but it will be gone by Wednesday. Thanks again for your concern.

I have Dupuytren’s disease and so gripping anything for long periods of time results in severe cramping with my hands. I was using a Hobie Revolution which was close to effortless with its pedal drive. The weight of our two kayaks got to be a hinderance and we sold them. Now I am looking at a 44 lb inflatable double that can accept a Bixby drive unit for windy days at the ocean. One needs to adapt even if it is a pain to do so.
