Aluminum canoes were a step forward from the heavy wood and canvas boats that took a lot of hand work. Al boats were cheaper and lighter, but aluminum cannot be bent into complex shapes. The boats have full ends and are slow but plenty buoyant going over waves and carrying a load. They stick on rocks and are made in 2 halves held together by a keel. They can take a beating and spend the winter in a snowbank without damage.
