Anyone know anything about otters?

They return to the ocean for the winter
and spring months. In late May they migrate to the lakes and ponds to make nests and bring little loons into the world.

Thanks arkay - that was great!

I see critters along the shore too.

I ran into this one on the shoreline of the tidal Kennebec river south of Bath. I dont know what it is but I see them on the coastal waters frequently. I should wear my glasses when I paddle. I usually have to wait until I get home to see what shows up in the pictures to tell what I saw but even then I can’t tell.

true enough…
I know enough about loons… but as i am paddling along the coast of mainein the summer months, i see a fair number of loons in adult plumage, just hanging out. Don’t you?

River Otters in NY
Here in New York they are being reintroduced. I have seen some while paddling. Usually around sunset. Here are two links on River Otters in New York.

Have a great day,

Mickalous

They’ve made a comeback
on the Kishwaukee River (south branch)in northern IL. Right now they’re pretty laid back and hang out where paddlers can see them. Not a high traffic river, so the otters are very curious.

Loons
Are you familiar with double-crested cormorrants? They look similar to loons and are all over Frenchmans Bay in the summer. Here’s a photo of a loon in the winter: http://community.webshots.com/photo/106308129/106311876CWaEzh

BTW, I never answered your question. I saw the otters along Sheep Porcupine. Let me know if you see them. Thanks, Laura
