Thanks for the pics!
Thanks to everyone who posted pics. The Rav-4 pics were useful as we’ll probably put at least 1 of the boats (maybe 2) on the wife’s Sante Fe for our spring vacation (very similar lines, specs as the Rav-4). The new style of Frontier has the chunky, heavy duty roof rack factory installed and I think I will use that in conjunction with a T bar attached to the trailer hitch receiver.
Careful w/ the Rav 4
Factory rating for the roof rack is 65 lbs. Had considered buying one, but I need to carry two RX solo canoes so I ruled it out. Of course if you use a rack system that doesn’t mount on the factory rack then it won’t matter.
Not if you use …
add on cross rails. The factory cross rails are rated at 65lbs. I have a Thule set of cross rails that clamp mount on the side rails{rated 125 lbs} ,and close to roof rail mount ends. I get 42-44" spread, and have hauled 2 boats exceeding 100lbs with no problem. I DO use front & rear tie downs to prevent sudden wind related boat movement that may stress the side rails. The total weight of the 2 boats you see in one of my pictures is 92 lbs. They have traveled at 70mph,and over 500 miles so far,and my racks are still on my roof.

I wouldn’t be a minimalist…
If you are going to use your air conditioner, that will significantly reduce your power capability, and 6 is much more than 4 to start with. If you are going to add in more gear, maybe get another kayak or canoe to carry around, maybe do some hill climbing, or maybe take some company along, go with 6. Less chance of engine overheating and damage. Some 4s are ok for awhile, but time and statistics favor the 6. Happy tripping and paddling!
