Always had die-hards but going to Walmart after his video. Batteries are made by Johnson Controls. Make half the batteries in the USA. 129 each and I’m going for them. Doubt my batteries are more than three years old but that’s all they last anyway in diesels.
My view is if you have a 5 year 2 month old battery in your vehicle and you are experiencing starting problems when temps fall or when it sits more than a few hours is you need a new battery anyway you look at it. It is like having 30 years and 2 months on a 30 year roof. You are playing with fate. If you check the voltage running and it is around 14 volts. There is no question. That’s what the auto parts store do for the most part. Seeing as how even if it was running perfect it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get a new battery, that’s where I would start.
The time to buy a battery or roof is before they fail. My experience is it will fail when you are far away from home in the middle of the night all alone, cold rain and no cell service.
Batteries usually last me 3 years. I could care less about replacing them. Point was I didn’t think they were 5+ years old. Second point is life flies by. I had five rough terrain forklifts and was constantly dumping batteries like toothbrushes.
Connect the multimeter to the positive and negative battery terminals. If you don’t have a voltage of around 12.6 volts , you may have a bad battery. Now start the car, and look for a revised voltage over 10. If your voltage drops below 5 when the car is running, it is bad and should be replaced right away.
Hate to dash your hope PaddleDog, but my first EverStart Maxx lasted exactly 3 years, I got a pro rated replacement that didn’t make it to 3 in my Toyota FJ. When I bought my F150 it already had a a Maxx, date dot said it was about a year old and it died before it’s third birthday. That was during the height of Covid and the WalMart Auto center by me was being used as an employee entrance and they wouldn’t test or pro rate it, so I went over to Auto Zone and bought a Duralast Gold (1000 cca in a G 27). We shall see how it fares. My money is on 3 years.
I may eat these words, but it appears that a partially plugged in back up camera was the culprit. I unplugged it 3 days ago and haven’t had a problem starting since.
When the battery is getting older (3yrs+) even a very small drain can impact it in cold weather. Hopefully, by fixing that issue you will get the battery to last until next winter.
I have not used Adanced Auto before, but most places have the equipment, like you described, that can test the battery, starter and alternator to determine if one of them needs to be fixed/replaced. Since the bias of any business is to sell you something and they said everything was ok, I would trust them on that.
Had duralast gold in my Corvette dead in months. Lost recipe but they denied warranty. I had their transaction number and charge on my card to show them.
They said no we can’t find it on our system. They wouldn’t even let me look at their screen. They said “you know how many people have you name”? I said yes about 4 on Long Island and 5 on face book.
No hope dashed here batteries usually make it to 3 years and a month or two in my diesel trucks. So I just buy new ones. Shocked these lasted 5+ years.
Guy doing testing above I have found very credible PROJECT FARM. Only a few companies make batteries for cars in the entire USA.
On a further note I had pep boys install and alternator. The 4 of them lasted 2-4 months. They charged 610.00. I usually do stuff like that myself but it was Sunday afternoon and it was miss work or pay them. Last one I bought a FORD OEM REMANUFACTURED. Three or 4 years no problem. There is a difference in rebuilt items. Totally different standards.
GEICO insurance is great. Dead battery or flat they’re right their. Break down you’re towed. I even kicked in a few more bucks 50 I think and they towed me to MY mechanic 40 miles away.
what is electrolyte level? is it a sealed battery? as others said get battery checked after it has lost charge. typically batteries last only 80% of advertised life.
You probably tied into a fuse with a direct connection to the battery rather than one that only draws power when the key is turned on. Had that problem with one I installed on my Dad’s truck. I ask at Ford, and the guy there told me the wrong fuse to use to tie into. However, someone on YouTube had the right fuse to tie into.
