building trailer

jon boat trailer
my trailer is for my 14 ft jon boat which is pretty light in itself. by putting on the metal framework for the arms and posts, it is just as heavy as the jon boat and then putting on a couple of plastic boats along with composite, I am good to go. No issues.

The trailer I’m converting
is built on a torsion axle rated to 800 lbs. I calculate that with the fiberglass box, and steel on it I’ll be at about 150 lbs empty, probably 350 lbs loaded with two kayaks and gear.

Before I started the empty trailer (150 lbs) seemed to tow pretty smoothly. I think I’ll be OK, but I just want a little additional shock absorbtion.

Hey Tec
I am curious about your fiberglass box , do you have a good source for getting decent size boxes . That is always the hang up for me when putting a box on a trailer . I can usually build a fairly low cost trailer when converting from a used boat trailer , but then I add a box and the price goes way up .

Mine came with
the box. 32" W x 42" long x 24" high.

another harborfreight trailer
here’s my version:

it’s based on the hf boat trailer. have used it a lot this past summer and haven’t had a problem.

My design
is untested, but might be adaptable in a general sense. Wide, low lift height, and low density padding.
