Buying yaks that used to be rentals.

A very good buy. Congrats!
Get a bottle of 303, spray it on the hull (and deck if needed), wipe it off, and the color will be refreshed and your kayak will sparkle.

Wishing you many happy moments in your new boat.

Rental fleet kayaks
The roto molded Perception Carolina is pretty durable as is many plastic boats. Many livery services and kayak shops have their rentals they generate revenue with during the warmer months. At the end of the season and during the winter they are not renting and the boats are dead money.

Used kayaks is like anything else used. Some may be beat up and broken, others may just be scratched up a bit. Check out the condition. Look for deep gauges that my nearly be going through the hull. In a composite hull, inspect the outside and inside to see if the hull has been pierced. If it looks like it might have been, but has been repaired, it might be OK.

See if the bulkheads are in place and bonded and caulked. Make sure the seat is not broken. Check the foot pegs and see if they are there and can be moved and adjusted.

If it has a rudder, make sure it goes up and down See if the foot pegs and rails move and the rudder responds. If it has a skeg, see if the skeg goes down and retracts back.

And maybe just as important, see how comfortable you are in the boat.
