Canoe Help for Beginner

angstrom, that class 3 description
sounds like at least half a dozen rapids on the Nantahala, yet only one (Lesser Wesser) is generally regarded as class 3. People I know well at NOC insist that the Nantahala is a beginner stream. What they mean is that NOC instructors can nurse newbies down it without death and destruction. Most of us in the club scene class the Nantahala as “easy intermediate”. We put the OP’s planned run, the upper Chattahoochee, in the same category.

For me, a “beginner” or “novice” river is one where a bunch of canoeists or kayakers from a plains state, just trained in basic strokes and techniques, can run fairly easily with enjoyment and few or no swims. A river should not be downrated based on what people can do with an experienced guide.

SteveT = SteveD…no class II for beg.

Have to somewhat ditto SteveT's....if you're a beginner you need to get some time on the water(ie your balance) in a canoe before attempting moving water. Having said that...keep the cockpit ready to go swimming....in case. PFD fastened securely...etc. Read the water(pull over, get out and scout), loosen the hips and keep your weight over the keelline, but you probably know that...;-)
