Cat Kayaking

if any one of
our three lovely cat companions, who live in the most “cat-centric” household you could ever imagine, had the slighest hint that I might take any/all of them kayaking, they would lock me in the boat house and throw away the key.

Any they would be justified in so doing.

plastic bags work better
make sure to use strong zip ties for it’s safety.

front bungee
My cat will not fit in my day hatch. For trips of less than three hours, I usually attach the cat to my front deck, underneath the bungees. The legs fit fine without it being too tight.

The only time the cat seems to mind much is when I practice rolling.

My cat loves kayaks …

Just not when the are on the water ....

His favorite was my Mako Surf kayak ... it was quite old and had gone through several years of many owners in foul wetsuits. It smelled like low tide and dead sea creatures. He purely loved that boat... but I sold it and bought a much fresher one. He does like the new seat though, it's just the right size when he curls up.

a real picture
I found this picture a few weeks ago while looking for something else.

The cats I know prefer
doing whitewater. And they don’t like being stuffed inside hatches.

Oh, you mean “meow” cats.

Without an opposable thumb, they may have trouble holding the paddle. Maybe see if they’d like to learn skateboarding instead.

Delphinus
Excellent!

I did a “spit take” and I wasn’t even drinking anything!

Cats are genteel…
…civilized creatures who eschew most pedestrian activities.

Strongly suggest getting your cat its own hobby:

A pentobarbital drip
will make your cat happily comply with literally anything you want it to do.

You can also have it freeze dried and mounted.

“That’s the best cat I ever had!..” Grandma, Mars Attacks, 1996

Best way to get them in the day hatch is
to field dress them first…

are you serious??!!
After letting him behind the wheel, my cat isn’t allowed NEAR my kayak!

I think it depends on the cat.

Canoes different
Much safer for critters than a day hatch in a kayak.

I think you’re right

Ha! NM

Katayak
I thought that’s what the deck rigging was for?

why
would you want to? I don’t get it. The cat is prolly very happy to sit this one out. If something happened, either by your hand or the cat’s, you would never forgive yourself. The idea is stewpid. Paddle safe.

I think
this might be what you’re looking for. Would fit nicely in a day hatch

Mmmmmm…
Fractious Cats…

a serious reply
Yes I have taken a cat in a kayak before. The trick is to of course start them young. Forget the day hatch, that cat will be happier in the cockpit with you. You’ll only have the cat with you hopefully when it is calm enough to not have a skirt on and if it does get rough, the cat will be happier under a skirt than in an enclosed hatch. Use a nylon skirt, the cheaper the better. Also, make sure to have neoprene bottoms and booties for sure. If it does get rough, you don’t want to feel the claws as they dig in. I glued a 1/4" piece of minicell with a packtowel covering to the interior of my boat to give the cat something to grip.

The real trick is keeping a cat in a tent. There’s really no reason to take a cat kayaking unless you are trying to do an overnight. Cat’s, just like dogs, must be on leashes in many places so start leash training as well. Good luck.
