Cold weather headwear questions

I use a full cover NRS mystery neoprene helmet liner with my wool hats over if needed.

I love this photo! Did your friend’s eyelashes freeze together? Could he open his eyes? :scream:

Haha, thanks it’s a favorite of mine also…yes his top eyelashes were frozen to the bottom ones….it was clearly an epic paddle!

Okay y’all I know you are on the edges of your seats wondering about my headwear. Both of these Kokatat balaclavas arrived. The small fits okay but it’s snug on the head, especially with all my hair. It stretches but not a lot. The large isn’t as huge as I thought it would be so I’m going to keep that one. I can easily fit a ball cap under it to keep the sun out of my eyes on sunny days, and also plop a wool hat over the whole rig, so I think I’ll be plenty warm. The necks on these things are both very loose on me, but since I’ll be using it with a dry suit, it shouldn’t matter. I could easily fit a thick fleece neck gator under it on the coldest days. And the large is easier to pull down and wear as a gator.

It was 45 degrees F on my dog walk this morning. I should have the new kayak Monday night, and I cough cough anticipate a sick day from work soon after. I’m ready for some cold weather paddling.

The Kokatat Surfskin is two separate layers of material. The smooth skin rubber and a separate light fleece layer. As such it has quite good 4 way stretch. I’ve continue to carry the Surfskin here at the Store. I miss the LS shirts pants and shorts they used to make of the stuff as it was a great not-quite-drysuit temperatures garments.

I’m partial to the strap cap as it works well under a sun hat. It’s still sunny in the winter. it also fits under a helmet extremely well.

See you on the water,

It does stretch a lot, but it requires force, and it wants to go back to its unstretched state so much that it was pressing on my bun too hard to be comfy. It’d be a great fabric for shirts and pants! Dang I’m sorry I missed out on that.

Cut the bun? :face_with_monocle::rofl:

Samson never!

Or braid your hair instead of a bun (a braid lies fairly flat, a bun sticks out. When my hair was long, a braid was the only reasonable solution under winter hats, bike helmets, or other tightly fitting headwear…)

You think hair grows on trees like money?

You convinced me. In fact, I’m going to shave my head. Should I go complete cue ball, or buzz cut?

But seriously, I wish I had thought of trying it with a braid as @narrby suggested. D’oh! I’ve already taken the tag off and washed the large so I’m stuck with it now. Oh, well. That size gives me more options.

If your braid is long enough, put a carabiner on the end and use it as a contact tow. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

OUCH. Ironically, I decided I was tired of having so much hair and cut off more than half of it last night.
