colour advice.. is a white gelcoat really such a terrible choice?

And Swift kayaks come in some wild combos now, Check out Purple Rain… Real men would wear this?http://www.swiftcanoe.com/kcolours---purprain

If I were to buy a new sea kayak, I’d definitely consider white. Mostly because my “mango” (think: daughter of orange and lemon had a child with a peach) boat fades pretty badly in the sun.

but upside down you’d look like a whitecap. I really think kayaks ought to have SOS printed on the bottom in big letters ; lime green

Aren’t neon orange and mango slightly different colors? That’s what Kayamedic was questioning.

Oh yes very different. I had it on parts of a Corvette I road raced. Fades very fast even though it was always covered when not in use.

Indeed. Maybe some bright, colourful stick-on vinyl would be in order. Bottom would be too easily scratched though.

With most hulls already white, that’s already an issue when counting fish.

lol yah… There is definitely roofracking in its future Overstreet ^^ Getting a spot at a canoe club here for convenient little jaunts near home with my kid but it is going to travel some for sure…

Your post brought back memories.
I had a customer that ordered a sailboat and insisted on a dark blue hull. It looked fantastic until he scraped it against a SF/Oakland Bay Bridge pier. That boat was a nightmare to repair.

too true… Dark colours are pretty darn difficult to fix up - évery little unevenness shows… rolls eyes at whatever impulse I had in doing our siding and garage woodwork in high gloss charcoal grey after 4 generations tried their hand at the same wood…

Should have seen the 60 foot boat they built at a friend’s shipyard. Nice glossy blue hull, that turned out to be just a smidge too wide for the doors because on paper it was fine but without the deck on it that hull sagged out just enough to get nicely shaven on both sides all along its length before they knew what was happening…

The outcome - a very pretty Desert White Pal =]
and come winter some time spent with some ash wood to make nice to the touch and more pleasing to the eye gunnels ^^

Thanks for the input everyone!
