CLCs SportTandem
is a possibility but it’s not stable, has limited carrying capacity as the aft paddlers sheer will be under water in waves,it needs a stronger/deeper rudder than the Feathercraft II as it only sticks down a few inches below the keel. The review of it on the Product Reviews links was done by a CLC employee and his girlfriend two months after it was in production and the first time it was ever in wind/waves. You would NOT want a push/pull rudder footpegs with double that will require decent bracing skills for paddling in waves. The sportTandems length and rocker will pop the rudder out into the air a lot and for a double that’s surprisingly maneuverable for it’s length you really don’t want it to go everywhich way on waves or feel the rudder grab/release on waves from the stern. I was in it on flat water with a friend before I installed the rudder and was surprised how easily it initiated a turn with a lean. And how easily two 200lb paddlers could tip it if they leaned. Once that much momentum starts turning it takes a LOT of corrective force to get back on track so the rudder isn’t a minor part of the design. The folks who were “TeamCLC” in their big double tandem discovered the Feathercraft double rudder would bend from wave action alone in big water,6’ waves. Given the stresses put on a double rudder in waves it would be worth going to a strong attachement like the various other rudders out there and not a through deck spindle.
