Weenie, a lot of this is academic. You need the basics and build upon it. Go and do it.

Looks like a great kayak for the price even if you have to make some repairs / replace some parts.
More important that that CD kayak, I suggest you find an ACA or BCU kayak instructor and take an Introduction to Kayaking class from them. It will jump start you to lots of kayaking fun done more safely than if you just wing it.
