Still sharks
I’d rather white water than kayak with big sharks underneath me.
Yes, Dane Jackson was here a few days ago. I couldn’t believe I saw his rig right in front of my eyes as I was leaving the gas station. I snapped this quick shot http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y394/VidPicShare/WP_20140420_0041_zps09ccd8ef.jpg
I think the Black is mild compared to other rapids those guys take on. Like he says, the water is deep so not much of a threat of smashing into underneath rocks.
A small film I took of the Black a few days ago, or so… Never seen it this high before. This is right next to the biking trail I ride…it was awesome. http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/VidPicShare/media/072_zpsfa96aa56.mp4.html
Jackson
I think it’s wild that he comes up from Tennessee, merely from hearing the Black River is up, to have a little fun. Talk about having the life…

Funny
I love ocean paddling. The seamanship, the fresh air and the thrill of being in open water are just some of what drives me. Being two miles from any land making a crossing makes your senses come alive like nothing else in this world. Surfing is pretty fun too. Also, freaking out power boaters who see you paddle up onto a barrier island beach miles from nowhere in that skinny sea kayak is pretty cool too.
Everyone freaks out about the sharks, but they're really not a serious threat. I've been within petting distance of a big Bull, and it just slowly swam off. Just recently, I had a Spinner shark jump clear out of the water about 30 feet into a surf launch. I've also had 13 footers run the surface beside me. What a charge!!!!
As others have said foolish power boaters are your biggest threat just like on fresh water.
Fresh water scares me more. Crazy brain eating amoeba and a host of other baddies inhabit Southern fresh waters.
I think it's all where we grew up. I feel safer on any of my kayaks or my ski than when as a kid when I would jump on a boat cushion and swim out into the salt water rivers.
I have no idea …
what kind of paddler this Op is, but know that he is a great troller. This thread hits new lows on Paddling.net. How silly!

I can imagine lots of scary things
If a russian nuclear sub surfaced right below me, for example.
So I’m selling my sea kayaks.
Actually…
shark attacks on surfers and spear fishermen are the most common (if you can spot a trend on such small samples). All other attacks seem to be pretty much random events.
The only time I was ever uncomfortable about being in the ocean was when I was diving with a hunter who wounded a sheepshead off the channel islands. I captured the dying beast and put it in my bag. For the rest of the dive (and the slog back to the boat), I did indeed think about sharks. I was never much for spearfishing and this just solidified my discomfort in killing animals for sport.

How about our own Navy?
Got plenty of subs around already right from the good ol' U.S.A. Plenty creepy enough without adding the foreign factor.
"What's that black thing sticking out of the water--a shark? NOPE!"
USOs dude!
Unidentified Submersible Objects.
What better place for the aliens to hide than under the ocean. We have far less knowledge of it than skies and space. You could get Bermuda Triangled or something. Krakens are nothing in comparison.
My Concerns About the Ocean
1. Seasickness
2. Jellyfish
3. Drunken powerboaters
4. Sudden, unpredicted bad weather.
5. Not timing the tide right at the inlet.
6. Seasickness
7. Drunken powerboaters
8. Bad sunburn
9. Seasickness
10. Bonking
11. Shark attack
Most of this stuff you have control over. Eat ginger to prevent seasickness. Sunscreen and a hat for the burn risk. Plenty of energy food to ward off the bonk. Skills for rough weather, etc.
If you ever decide to go ocean kayaking, take a look at my list first. I'm sure others could add more.
(You get good and seasick and you'll be begging a shark to come and kill you)
What scares me…
This thread has a shot at making it to 100 posts!
Knock-knock…
Who’s there?
Land Shark.
Land shark who?
LAND SHARK-YOU!!!
Like plastic ocean trash
it keeps bobbing to the top and recirculates a la toilet bowl.
Crazy?
Man I just got back from a paddle out in Resurrection Bay. Found myself in the midst of an Orca pod. It was awesome. Just glad I did not have a sea lion riding on my kayak. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMOf3G47CSc&list=UUw-SQYWYmzVJv2Yojzr24DQ
Real vs perceived danger
With a spirit of humorous discussion let’s look at some numbers. On average sharks kill one person in the U.S. every two or three years. That’s an average of less than 1 fatality per yer. Worldwide sharks kill about 6 people (yes JUST 6) every year. In contrast, here in the United States alone, these are stats for human fatalities due to other animals:
Bears- 3
Spiders- 7
Snakes- 10
Horses- 20
Cows- 22
Dogs- 35
Bees- 53
Mosquitoes- 100
Deer- 200
I know you have deer and cows up there in upstate NY. WATCH OUT!
I remember that sea lion
Awfully close quarters…
you forgot the jellyfish

o my we better stay home safe!
Yeah, but then you will have the
anti-gun fanatics start ranting about how much more likely you are to be killed by a gun simply because you have one in the home!
Uh-huh. but if I’m still itching from
jellyfish stings and mosquitoes bites, I just might want to blow my brains out…Try calling a Suicide Hotline with that and they’ll put you on hold;-
(Reply number seventy-something and counting.)
that was cool
