what type of boat
are you using—is it a kind that can be rolled easily by experienced rollers?

I was too cheap to pay for lessons and even too cheap to buy the book. I went into L.L. Bean and looked at a book on rolling; picking out a roll type at more or less random, I studied it there in the store. The following weekend I put my kayak in a swimming pool and eventually worked out a roll. My roll was pretty unreliable for a year or so. In retrospect I think a lesson would have saved me a great deal of aggravation that first year. These many years later I have a very reliable roll.



I have never understood why people use the C-to-C roll that requires you to lift your center of gavity a couple of feet out of the water as opposed to a layback roll that only requires you to lift your center of gravity up a foot, nor does a layback require a hip snap.
