although there are some out there
Is it possible to tell us where they are or who has them?
Wish I’d seen that a couple weeks ago
Just came back from your part of the world. I didn’t get a chance to paddle, but did spend a couple of windy days wishing I had a long skinny boat up at the lake where we were.
Salty
Didn’t you say you owned a Romany at one time. If so, where did you get it?
Let’s go one step further Jed
How bout you, Wilso, and Celia come out next summer and do a paddle down the west coast of Vancouver Island, including rounding Cape Scott. I’ll arrange for different boats at different locals along the way. We’ll have an Explorer, Romany, Maybe an Epic, Coaster, some proto’s and weird stuff…whatever you want. We’ll get a chance to try out all of our theories in some rough seas and on long days. While not a race, or macho gig, we will need to cover some ground, so long days are part of the deal. You’ll have a year to get ready. I’d love to show you some of my favorite places, and will also arrange for some cool surf kayaks and some surfing. You guys get here with your personal gear and I will arrange everything else. There are several places to bail should you decide you are not enjoying yourselves (unlikely). I’m serious. I think you’d actually enjoy my company in spite of my internet persona, and I also think you’d come away with some different thinking…not better…just different. My frustration is in knowing what’s possible and contrasting that with what’s the “norm”. I’d love to see Sea Touring evolve like surf kayaking has.
As for my Romany…It’s a skegless apple green deck…sorta apple green. Purchased at the now closed Pacific Water Sports many years ago.
Not sure where the little 15 is on the east coast, but I did give one away to a woman here in Wa., who loves it.
Think about my offer. You’ll meet some awesome folks and have a blast.
As for your Romany
that’d be British Racing Green, not apple green ya Washingtonian! Sheesh.
Guess again guy
NOT Brit racing green…light green, but what the hell do I know.
My bad
turquiose, guy.
come out next summer and do a paddle
Tempting offer, we have been talking of paddling the Pacific NW and I've dreamt of Vancouver Island for decades...
Now if I can just get that pesky job out of the way ;-)
Get NYS to pass early retirement.
I’ll be 55 within three months - if anyone can get NYS to pass the early retirement incentive bill that’s been hanging around I can likely do this stuff. Please call and write my legislator!
Thanks…that’s it…whew!
Hey, this is serious stuff!
We need to know these things. When you’re watching CNN tonite and all the trougle in the Middle East, at least you can sigh in relief that we figured out the official color of your boat. Now, you’d think they could solve thier problems.
And , hey, don’t mention it, your welcome, glad I could help. Yes, you’ll sleep better tonite.
Your buddy …
just vetoed it. sigh
Welcome any time
The trip described is only a two week gig, so you outta be able to swing that. But seriously any of you have a free place to stay and I can introduce you to some misfits etc. Can’t guarantee politically correct sea kayak sorta stuff, but you’d have fun… Take care whatever ya paddle, even if it’s a 55 lb. boring log. See ya’ll in a couple of months!
Time all used sadly
3 weeks on teh coast in Maine each summer, almost a week for the Downeast Sea Kayak Symposium in Bar Harbor in the next month, a week away at Christmas with my sister’s family this year… most of my vacation time is already taken for kayaking on the east coast. Not complaining, but I do have limits.
(John, some hope that a bill may still be doable when they come back next month according to the optimists in my place.)
Heavy boats
You seem to keep repeating that people “want” to paddle heavy kayaks, but I’ve never met a paddler who wished his boat weighed more. People don’t paddle boats because they are heavy – they paddle boats they like that happen to be heavy. I can’t imagine that an Explorer fan would turn down a version that was 20 pounds lighter with the same durability.
People will put up with excess weight, poor workmanship, and bad service to get a hull design that they really like.
And as for “preferring” to paddle “boring” boats, don’t blame the individuals if that’s all they’ve had a chance to paddle. How are folks supposed to appreciate your design genius if they never see your stuff?
People will put up with excess weight…

This is the reason there are so many NDK boats on the water – especially Romanys and Explorers
