Good cars for kayaks?

QCC QX15?
Never heard of that.

Car
I have a Chevy HHR and put two ten foot long Kayaks on roof.

Saw a Focus Wagon Yesterday
If Ford hadn’t quit making them it would definitely have been on my list to test drive. Same with the Suzuki Forenza wagon. I really wanted a Corolla or Camry or Civic or Accord wagon. No such things anymore!

Saturn SW1 - Great Wagons
Did a 6,000 km. trip thru Atlantic Canada this summer, two VOLKSKAYAKs loaded - and I mean loaded - with gear up top on our '99 SW1 and the back jammed with our camping stuff. Very low roofline, good rack spread, great gas mileage, reasonable oil mileage (inside Saturn joke), totally reliable. Nothing fancy, but we’re gonna drive it 'till it just won’t go any more. Great wagon - of course, since it is, GM has killed it off…

Will someone please bring to

market a good mid-size wagon? Not a crossover. Not a Euro-sport luxe box. Something like the Accord/Camry/Taurus than can actually haul kids, camping gear and a couple of boats without breaking the bank.

P.S. Outback was almost there until Subaru got stupid.

I meant the old Taurus wagon, not the
crossover of a couple of years ago.

Nissan Juke

30 mpg, loooong roofline for a small car(look at the space between the door cuts for rack spacing), an awd option, and under 20k.

Besides, you don’t see it from the inside (be the ONLY one on your block!).

Magnum?
I always thought the Dodge Magnum would make a good hauler - very long low roofline, big cargo space in the back. I don’t know much about it though, except it’s discontinued and there are many used ones for sale at reasonable prices - if you do the used car thing, that is.

Might as well wear a hat with the
Viagra logo embroidered on it. Besides, I don’t golf.

LOL
The long roofline looks great - until you realize there is no rack rail and the hatch opens up along the roof about 2’ from the rear window.

Plus - it’s a chrysler. Hence the great resale.

Oops

I didn't know that about the hatch, sounds like a deal breaker. I have seen one with rails. Don't know anything about golf or viagra, either, I drive a Mini...

I use…
…an '09 Audi A4 wagon with roof rails and the sports suspension which lowers the car slightly. The engine is modded for more go power and I still manage better than 30 mpg with a boat on the roof.

You really can’t beat having a low roof for boat hauling.

Another vote for the Mini
Great car!!! Fun to drive, great on gas. The most fun you can have with an everyday car. I’d recco stick because i’m a purist. Get the Leather with piping and you’ll be hard pressed to find a more comfortable seat in a car. Surprisingly, the car is very roomy up front and my 6 foot 2 inch frame has no problem fitting and being comfortable, even on long drives. Which, for some reason are frequent. Wanna get some ice cream? I hear there’s a great place at Seneca Rocks West Virgina. It’s only 5 hours away. Vroom!!!

Nice car. Wish I could afford one.

Nice
Beautiful boat… The mini copper is nice too!

I’ll second the Hyundai Elantra Touring
It’s like it was made for hauling boats. Easily accessible hook for bow tie down in front, nifty hide-away stern tie down that allows you to open up the back hatch freely with the lines in place. Rock solid factory rails. Great gas mileage. Huge gear carrying capability. A 10 year/100,000 mile warranty. Fun to drive. Excellent reliability statistics. Top notch safety systems. Great sound system. And best of all…a refrigerated glove box!!

2010 Honda Fit

yeah it's a bit ugly. It's small. My "friends" at work call it cute- nothing a man wants to hear when somebody describes his ride. For many it is a bit too much to be seen driving one.
However, if you can toss your masculinity out the window this little car is fun to drive, very inexpensive, more than capable of carrying two kayaks on the roof and a couple of mountain bikes in the back (inside), can't really do much better for gas mileage, and can carry adults in the backseat if one wants.

I decided to buy one recently to use specifically for kayak hauling to replace my 01 Cherokee. The Cherokee, while a great vehicle, is just too expensive to keep. And really, the fit is almost a big inside, if not bigger. I will miss the off road capability but I think I like the concept of driving the Fit 300 miles on $20 worth of gas. I will miss the ability to drive through a foot and half of snow but really those days are few. In a way it sucks to be practical but as I get poorer the small car makes perfect sense and having a 4wd doesn't.

I won't be able to drive the logging roads like I can in the jeep but I am ok with that.

I picked up a base model. The upgrades are fluff and do little as far as performance goes. I mean you can buy a Sport model but it is still a little pig with lipstick and a wig. The larger wheels do little other than make this subcompact car more appealing to the yutes.

The Fit is cheap to insure, cheap to fix, cheap on brakes, cheap on tires, cheap on gas, ect. Lately, I am all about trying to save a buck. I won't miss the Jeep much. I know I wont miss fixing it.

Good on ya, Scott.
Put the skinniest snows you can get on it and you might just be amazed at how well it goes in the white stuff.

You can if…
…you’re not married

It’s not the married part, it’s them
dang KIDS!
