Kayaking hat
Is this why you need a new lid??? : http://losangeles.fbi.gov/pressrel/2007/la061307.htm

goofy name
What a sucky name to be recognized by…nothing like the Unibomber or Hannibal the Cannible…no…you are known as the goofy hat robber…he won’t last long in jail.

blowing off…
Sorry I didn’t clarify–I tried a friend’s kavu and it kept blowing off my head. The LL Bean hat I use doesn’t, and I used to have the COlumbia hat someone else mentioned, and that stayed on my head too.

So that’s what those things are for…
My husband and I have never had nearly that much fun with those things-Toddy

Nope, you can’t have everything …
After getting a little too sun burned lately, and having to chase a few hats after they blew off, I decided something more appropriate for kayaking was needed. Looked at some of the hats mentioned here, but wanted to be able to try 'em on for fit. So after looking around, I found a few places selling Tilly (REI, EMS)… no one had a size that seemed to fit. Then I stopped at the Natick Outdoor Store (for you folks in Mass) and found a better inventory of Tilly and Columbia hats … 20% or so less than REI and EMS. Ended up with a Tilly Air Flow.

So, regarding your criteria, here’s my take. Tried it out yesterday … weather service said 10 - 15 knots. Hat stayed on … never lifted off my head. I think the air flow vents may help. Also has a neck cord. Material is light, water repellent, and rated at 50 SFP. Brim goes all around, and is firm enough not to flap around. Covers the back of the neck well. Can’t roll, so I don’t know about that …

Regarding the dork factor, well, I never thought I’d put a hat like that on my head (strictly a ball cap person until now), but I’m kinda liking it. But then I’m more of a practical type … if it does what I want then who cares what it looks like. However, when my 13 year old daughter saw me trying it on, she immediately yelled “MOM!!! You won’t believe what he’s got on his head! He’s trying to RUIN MY LIFE!”

What about kokatat hats??
Check this out…haven’t tried it, but it looks good…

It’s the only
thing Kokatat has made that I didn’t like. The brim is way too floppy in a breeze. I still have it (all white) and will send it to you (free) if you want to try it, just email your address.
