I was fortunate to paddle with Derek
last month while he was in the Sacramento area. As a novice paddler, I had heard his name and was aware that he was in the industry/sport for many years. I found him to be a fun and genuine person who was sincere and patient in answering my questions about paddling, kayaks, etc. And after our 4 hour paddle, he showed us some of his skills…amazing guy and our sport is fortunate to have this guy in it. Derek has a good wit, wealth of knowledge, and a very decent guy.
No hit on Derek
He's a great guy, he has done much, he deserves huge credit. He also stretches a bit and if he were most people that could be kindly noted without everyone feeling the need to jump to his defense. From what I can tell, he defends himself just fine.
I’ve met him
and sat through several of his very amusing talks. He’s a good story teller and has much to draw from.
But his interviews are much like his presentations. A little truth, some exageration, and certainly truth stretched a bit for comic relief.
I once sat through his crossing the North Sea talk. Towards the end of the talk, I had to leave in order to meet up with friends, so as I got up, I excused myself, he stared right at me, so I said to him “did you make it?” He said “No”!
