3 months as a sofa-slug. Finally got the word from the Doc that I can toss the walking boot and start being active. Do I ease into it? Hell no, over cooked it (at the gym and on the bike) and gave myself a set back. Always had the discipline to go hard, now I’ve got to develop the discipline to go easy.
Last year the first river trip after a heart attack, we got tired navigating the high flows. My brother and I just rolled out our sleeping bags under pine trees for thermal cover. We slept in the open the whole trip with our dogs. Sometimes the best roof is the sky.
And the best heater can be a warm body. I’ve never tried a dog.
For years I used to paddle with cute girls. Now I paddle with old men and dogs.
Tom T Hall sang those are the best company.
When we camped in 20 F, we had to unzip the roof tent from just our body heat. And the dog was in the Defender.
After some recent testing, the heart function has made a surprising recovery. I am now planning a backpacking trip at age 73 for the first time in years. The trick is to hike some volcanic plateaus full of lakes that are not too high in elevation. They are only around 7,000 feet instead of 10,000 feet like most of the Sierra High Country.
