High winds and roof mounted kayaks

My suggestion
I have used Yakama and Thule for many years and I will NEVER use their clamp to the roof rail system again…too many times of them popping off/pulling out of the clamped edge of the roof. Scary and am lucky the times it happened…and yes, I use fore/aft lines.

I now use the Yakama base feet that are drilled directly into my roof…rock solid and not going anywhere. They make a low profile foot and it’s easy to lock/unlock in the crossbars. I’ve transported 2 15’ kayaks, one flat with hull up and the other on a J cradle and survived some heavy winds a few times. In wind, I slow down!

I’m considering some sort of permanent
foot or rail installation on a new vehicle. Did you install them yourself? How difficult is it? Any special tools needed?
