How can I bring my dog kayaking?

Dogs and kayaking
I cannot speak to the stability, but when canoeing with my daughter, we met up with a recreational kayak paddled by an older gentleman with his dog on a homemade wooden deck on the foredeck. The dog was of a medium to large build. He kept the boat in trim, but I don’t know how.

This was on a mill pond and its feeder creek so it was protected water.

I take my dog
but my boat has a long-ish cockpit that seems unique to folding kayaks. Plus he’s a pug, so he doesn’t take up all that much room.

Tandom kayak

Heavy either way. . . .
I would agree with most here that you need a canoe. A tandem kayak would give you the room also, however, your concern is weight, and tha ability to handle it yourself. Many tandems are going to be as heavy as a canoe, and you can get some pretty light canoes if you have the budget. You may also want to look at Native kayaks @ http://www.ultimatekayak.com/. They’re kind of a cross between a kayak and canoe, more of an open kayak, without being a SOT. No experience with them, but search this site and you’ll find some experienced input.

Rob Roy
You could try to find a Rob Roy… I’ve never seen one in person and I don’t know how easy it would be to find, but it looks like it would fit the bill.

Bell also makes a 15. Essentially decked canoes.

Native Ultimate
I use the Native ultimate with our 85 lb rotwillier mix. So far have not had an issue, although it can be alittle scarry when he decides he wants to stick his head down to the lake for a drink. If I get a chance I will post a photo of us in the ultimate

In a doggie bag

Dogs in kayaks
I have a friend that paddles class 2 whitewater with his #80 shepard in a tandem keewee. The dog is a better boater than his brother.

depending on temperament
and trainability it IS possible for your dog to ride on your back deck, in front of the rear hatch.

I have not done this with my dog, but have seen a Golden Retreiver sit behind its owner. The dog was sitting on a Rubbermaid shower mat with the little cup feet. The dog was exquisite with balance and could stand and turn without upsetting its owner, who btw couldnt see the dog.

The boat was a full size sea kayak, dont remember which. It was 16 feet long and about 23 in beam.
