How do you start a Fire?

Girl Scouts but…
they kicked me out… The beard gave it away

If you’re desperate…
and have a bag of corn chips, they burn quite well to get some tinder going. The are full of oil. (Saw that on “Surviorguy” on Discovery) Lots of great ideas her though. Thanks for the post…

interesting, pinecones
I never thought about that…thanks!

About that Gel
Any place that sells Pellet Stove Pellets has that gell in a bottle about the size of a quart of Oil - some a bit smaller

As for me - - well since I’m still a smoker (don’t say it) I always have a Bic or Zippo with me, and ususally pack voltive candles. Almost always does it for me.

PS - - As an assistant scout master, I’d better be able to do it with matches, but I’ve rarely ever found decent waterproof ones.

If sunny…
an old magnifying glass, 9V batteries with aluminium foil,or some old shot gun shells with the shot removed. Remove the wad, remove the powder, strike primer{holding brass end with something other then your fingers, will get very hot} placing powder on what you want to burn. Road flares work too. Steel wool, dryer lint animal hair{our yours},nylon stocking, for flash kindling. Just some survival things I was taught by a Vietnam vet years ago.Lots more ,but that’s all I can remember now.

As an Eagle Scout
I learned and practiced the afore mentioned technique of starting with the itsy bitsy stuff from a standing tree and working your way to logs. We were given two kitchen matches per patrol to get a fire. I took great pride in being the “firestarter” of the Flaming Arrow patrol. I never failed. I now use Trioxane. And carry a few lighters.

Maine islands
having a fire on the maine island (MITA) does not fall under the Leave NO Trace principle. Many of these islands fire is not permitted.

The islands are fragile.

I think the boy/ girl scouts should be brought up to date in regards to ther fire starting technique, if this is what they are still teaching. You cant go out stripping the trees… not only can you kill a white birch by stripping the bark - but it simply doesn’t look as nice or natural for the next visitor.
