How wide should I make my paddle?

The nice thing about making your own
greenland paddles is that you can experiment with different sizes and shapes to find what works best for you. I like to use a paddle with a 3 7/8" width for surfing. It gives me good bite and fast acceleration using the Spear The Salmon technique. I find that it limits the amount of cant I can use when doing all other paddling and limits the use and technique of the greenland design. For all my other paddling I enjoy using a paddle that’s 3 1/4" wide. This width allows me a larger window to play with the cant of the blade for a much more rewarding experience. Use whatever width you like but keep trying different sizes and shapes especially through the learning phase of using a greenland paddle.
