Stick with what works - find yourself another Explorer. This was us on an 1800 release on the Dead in ME last summer - mostly class II with some class III rapids. The Explorer was great. Actually whatever royalex boat you can find will work. I have an old Mohawk Whitewater 16 that is built like a tank.
p.s. - just noticed that you bought an Appalachian - good boat. Buddy has one and loves it.
