I’m a longtime road cyclist who started paddling about 2 years ago. I definitely aim for a workout when I paddle, but take it easy and smell the flowers when paddling with my wife.



As much as I would like to use a GPS, I haven’t purchased one yet because other paddling and cycling gear have been bigger priorities. However, I always keep track of my paddling time and usually go back later and calculate my mileage and average speed on Google pedmaps. It’s sort of a poor man’s GPS but surprisingly accurate.

To really push your self, you need to race and get beat. Then get mad and go faster and beat someone else.
