Kayak shoulder pain :)

Same thing at 70.

Thanks for all the good advice! I am considering a smaller paddle or other type - but will wait and see if it is an inflammation I have got because I have traveled many miles in a few months and am new starting - If rest and rehabilitation does not to solve the problem I seek out a specialist and buy another type of paddle…

Yanas my epic mid wing is 210-215 cm has it on 215 and is 179 cm high

Rene, it sounds like you already have this on your mind, mentioning not rolling your shoulder forward. So just something to mess with.
It can be difficult to immobilize arms and shoulders during the crank phase of the forward stroke. And I think the shoulder is strongest and most comfortable in a neutral position, not rolling forward or back. Intentions and what you think you’re doing aside, really concentrate on not rolling that shoulder at all during your crank just to see if you can immobilize it further while paddling. I have no idea if it will work for this situation. I’ve had some pain, albeit something I would describe a little differently in my case, where this hyper-mindfulness of shoulder movement has done the trick. Just a thought.
Shoulders are tricky. Good luck getting things back in order.

At my advanced age I have recently been diagnosed with arthritis in my left shoulder. This has impacted my paddling. I then had a session with a knowledgeable Physical Therapist who suggested a set of exercises to develop musculature etc. in that shoulder to take some of the load off the joint. I am now paddling with less shoulder pain and am able to go further. If the improvement continues I’ll defer visiting an orthopod.

I use a GP for paddling and can avoid stressing that shoulder. I believe the paddling also helps the shoulder, as long as I don’t overdo it.

I agree. To take care of mine I’m a less aggressive paddler with a narrower blade. I just paddled 6 miles but rested every time my shoulder started to complain. Frustrating but my shoulder doesn’t hurt.
