Kayaking superior
check this link out. Wind speeds for the U.S. Just put your pointer on the area you want & it will tell you the current wind speed
http://hint.fm/wind/
The map is neat
but hardly accurate to the scale needed.
The wind is up on my lake today. Its running about fifteen with whitecaps.
My house is two hundred feet back from shore. Not much wind.
And there is no cell phone service nor Internet out while you are taking a kayak trip. Even if the map was accurate there is no way to get to it.
I wonder where the OP is?
Primarily Wind flows [ West - East ]
With no trees on the lake, the wind blows a long, long way.
The lake is about 350 miles in length
and 160 miles in width.

Something called "fetch" - time of wind over water

Got to do the homework and understand the lake

she’ll be back
Be patient, the OP is new here. I directed her to the P.net site and forums last weekend after she initially posted her question on another general sports “answers” forum that has few experienced paddlers on it.
Inland Sea
Here’s a piece I recently wrote comparing and contrasting the Great Lakes, and Superior in particular, to an ocean environment:

Superior is unlike any other place, and her moods are as varied and unpredictable as any woman. In fact, I believe it is her usual serene nature that lulls so many paddlers and sailors into getting in over their heads. But sunny or stormy, she’s one of the most beautiful places on earth …
