They have a Moccasin that would be easy enough to build. It's 12' and I think i remember something even smaller.

I built one of their plans, pretty easy.

or you could go with a Pamlico 140, I've read it's a rec boat for young people. My bad, it's a pubescent touring kayak, not pre-pubescent.

Perception Acadia Scout
It might be a bit too large for him now, but a 5yr old boy has a lot of growing ahead of him and with an Acadia Scout, itll probally last him till his 10, or even 12 years old. Then, at that time, you can upgrade him to a Adult kayak he desires.

But the Acadia scout is a very nice kayak, a True traditional sit-in touring kayak with good performance witch can keep up with a larger kayak. Its not a cheapo kids yak that looks like a Soapbar holder like some I’ve seen.

Check out the Acadia scout, pretty nice, Huh??

Good luck. Oh, and Always paddle near the kid for safety. when hes 8 or 9 he can start being more independent in paddling because of increased judgement but still paddle with him and supervise him.

Dude…
Dont joke around on advice threads. People who are not very knowledgeble with kayaks can take it seriously and get mislead with that info. A pamlico 140 is Way to large for a 40 pound person

Cool Pic!!
All pamlicos are nice kayaks…
