In reference to lakes I might end up doing some day trips on Lake Jocassee, my mom and I both really like the area, but they would more likely be closer to shore exploration. I think that is likely the largest lake I would be spending any time on.

I paddle Jocassee frequently.My favorite lake. It is frequently windy but rarely too rough for any recreational kayak.
Our Meetup group, Greenville Sea Kayakers, schedule trips there a few times a year. You can get free advice from a bunch of nice people.
