Re the question on height, it needs to fit under the open garage door, so about 7 feet max. The kayaks are 12’ but I might get a 14’ or 15’ at some point.
Let us know what you decide to do, that would be interesting…
Ok that eliminates storing vertically, as in standing on end.
The rack i bought that holds 4 boats is only 4.75 ft. with urethane wheels. and holds a metric ton.
the 6 boat one is 7.05 Ft. which might be a might bit too high.
@mjac I was going for simple like I use outside at the Store for my daily displays. Moot with 7’ ceilings. Enough other ideas afloat here that something will work.
Now if the OP didn’t have 12’ kayaks already I’d have a storage solution at no more than 4’3” per section
I told you…
Only hypothetical so not a solution for the OP
Justin Wilson was walking down the Bayou Boulevard in Acadiana and there was some construction going on with some telephone poles laying on the ground.
Then he spotted one of his friends, Boudreaux, on top of one of the poles being held up by a bunch of his friends fishing a tape measure down it.
So Justin yelled out,” Boudreaux, what the hell are you doing?”
Boudreaux responded, “ We are trying to find out how high this pole is.”
justin said,” Well, just lay it on the ground and measure it.”
Boudreaux responded incredulously,” We already know how long it is, we want to find out how high it is.”
@kapungo , @Marshall wants you to solve your storage problems by buying a $7,000 (soon to be $9,500) Stellar “Modular” Kayak. Guess who sells them…
Don’t worry, I have got my eyes on him.
And earlier today I noticed my brother used those square seat cushions (Academy sports) to stack 3 plastic sit on tops.
Yeah, I messed up on my drawing of the guy’s rack. The bottom set should be oriented like the upper set. I did mention that in an edit of my post.
@kapungo In the KIS realm what about 2’x3’ plywood base with a 48" 4"x4" lag bolted in about 1’ from the long edge with a Malone J cradle as shown in the picture. The non cradle boat could be placed on edge below it on the plywood. Add a bit of carpet for cushioning to the plywood, if you like.
@mjac Very funny. As I realized my attempt at keeping responses brief allowed for a bit more interpretation than I anticipated. Don’t worry about that pre-tariff Stellar ST19. It’s here waiting for you to pick up.
I can’t picture what you are describing, maybe it is me. Is it freestanding, flat, the function of the one 4X4 one foot in from s long edge? I can’t picture it. There is a real simple way to do it however using your very good Malone J Hooks. Picture a box made of 2x4s on a flat, the width where you want the Malone J Hooks, the height the measurement from the floor to the sheetrock ceiling. Position the “Box” where you want it, find two appropriate ceiling joists and screw the top of the box up through the bottom into the two ceiling joists. That braces it and supports it. Then…put four or even just two of your Malone J Hooks where you want them on the upright legs with the bottom kayak either resting on the floor tied to an upright or on a Malone J Hook. You can even put shelving on the opposite side with some simple shelving brackets and some 1x10s.
Drawback: It is stationary and can’t be moved taking up space in our garage. That is why portable is better. You always have to get things out of the way in a garage.
@Marshall ,I told you I was joking. As for your invitation to pick up the Stellar, I could not afford to walk into your store. Your “sraff” looks nice though.
Damn @Marshall , you have the 4x4 sticking straight up on end, I never would have pictured that. That was the idea of the “lag bolts”, to keep the 4x4 upright and fairly stable. I just caught on, you need two of them, I couldn’t figure out how it would work. Do you think they would be stable enough with the platforms 2’ wide with 2 kayaks hanging off of the 4x4s?
FYI, while I was writing the previous post, I had left the water running in the kitchen sink, the drain got stopped up and flooded the whole house. You costing me money and I have not even been to the store or website.
I like this idea (plywood base and risers with J hooks), will have to see what materials I have to use. It could be on wheels too if it is stable enough. Only downer is what to do with it when it is time to park in there again, maybe just take it apart enough to stuff in the shed or something.
Looks like we are on to something, he likes it.
You realize to make it portable it would take 8 castors and two people to move it…
