Pine Barrens Canoe Race
There is a race on the Tom’s River in October. it is run by the Ocean County Parks Dept. in Tom’s River. The Tom’s River is only a river by NJ standards, it would be a creek most other places. The race is against the clock with one canoe starting every minute. Downriver about 6 miles miles thru some very tight stuff then ending on a wide flatwater section. And its not race boats that win, its fast rec canoes that have the right balance of speed and turning ability. And canoes that are very familiar to the paddlers. You really need to be one with the canoe to go fast in the upper sections.
