Marine Weather Radio

prices could be better

Try Hamilton Marine (in maine or online), or Defender.com for better prices. West Marine is about the most expensive option out there in my opinion.

Earlier this year Hamilton was selling a Standard Horizon submersible VHF for $90.

battery tray
After your post, I read through the entire manual (including info about the battery tray accessory).

There is no mention of any problems with the tray and waterproofness. The only warning is that the radio isn’t waterproof without a battery in place. (That seems like a bit of a no brainer though!)

And my Icom is about 8 years old, so it’s not by any means a “newer” model.

thanks, Nate!
I didn’t understand “WX.” You’ve cleared that up. Really appreciate it. Did I mention I’m also in the market for a radio? So lots of good suggestions for Icom and Std. Horizon models in this thread. I hope to do some solo camping at the coast this year.

Mine is always with me anywhere near water. Exactly what Nate said, the NOAA WX scan alert function is a great feature on those iffy days.

Here are a couple submersibles on sale from Hamilton

Their website is pretty rough, but this is a great store with reliable shipping and helpful service. You can give them a call if you tire of navigating the site.

about battery packs . . .
Does anyone out on multi-day trips ever use a solar charger for their rechargeable VHF radio batteries? With good results, or . . .?

Dry bag
I never carry my VHF without it being in a dry bag made for it. To me it is not worth the chance that water gets in it and when I need it does not work. And yes I can work it with my gloves on in the winter.

Try it in rough water sometime…
…and you’ll discover the limitations of dry bags rather quickly.
