Mid Week Surf Session

I’m not sure what size of a cockpit you have, but the idea is to pull your knees towards your chest using the thigh braces (and knees against the upper deck in my case), it pulls your body down and gives you a strong position for tipping and edging on the side and using the bow to turn out of a pearl dive. Not sure this will work at all in a very long boat with little bow rocker.

Bongo sliding (side surfing) is almost inevitable in surf, unless you have the experience and ability to carve off the wave before it closes out. Unless you have no side surfing experience at all and need to learn/practice that, go for the slight angled diagonal run instead for practice. When the wave catches up and your boat broaches (or the bow dives), brace and edge into the wave side and side surf in until the foam pile lets go. Then back out and do it again (and again).

While I personally favor (automatically) go with a high brace (because I am generally in waves that are over my head when I am sitting in the boat), the safest route to go is with a low brace, especially in you practice in the smaller waves (2’ and under). This minimizes your chances of over reaching and dislocating a shoulder. Not a good thing if you are surfing/practicing alone.

Have fun out there.
