Memory has gotten very cheap lately. Hard disks have gotten cheaper too (not as fast) for much of the same reasons.
An 80gb iPod was $350 two years ago. Now, a 120gb one is $250.
I think you’ll see hard disks at the high end of capacity for a few years yet. Clearly, they will be replaced at the low end by solid state.
Not just a chachet thing

The iPods work well. If you are price sensitive, you'd look elseware. But the iPods aren't that much money (and they work well).
It doesn't mean the low end (non-iPod) devices are no good.
The Creative players seem pretty good too.
