Neo first
I suggest getting a neoprene skirt first. Then if it is too uncomfortable in the summer pick up something like the Kokatat tropos single layer breathable nylon. The neoprene will be the most versatile and best for learning to roll etc.
When I go out on a day tour in the middle of summer I tend to use the nylon but most of the time I prefer neoprene. I have a Brooks which IMO is a great beginner neoprene skirt. The grab loop is sewn in a way that it is impossible to get it completely tucked under the skirt (always check your grab loop to be sure it is accessable!) Also the edge of the skirt has a fat seam around the coaming that is easy to grab - good for getting it put on and for emergency removal if you are having trouble with the loop. I don’t know if they still make it.
surprise no one mention Reed/Chillcheate
we've got many neo spraydecks, yes they are taught and resonably waterproof but Chillcheater has advanced the science. I spent 2 hours yesterday under a Chillcheater coverall cag and wearing a Chillcheater spraydeck. The material used is tighter, lighter, and dries faster than neoprene. It is just as if not more waterproof than neoprene. You would be remiss if you dont at least look at their products before deciding on a spraydeck.
Also when it comes time (if ever) to look at a Tuliq, their model has a tighter face seal, is lighter overall than the neoprene models--it does not provide as much flotation nor insulation as the neoprene model.
Forgot to mention we got 2 inches of rain in the last 24 hours and i was snug as a bug.
On the same latitude as you
…just a thousand miles east. I use a neo deck with breathable tunnel and suspenders. On a hot day, I leave the top of the tunnel loose and splash water on the neo occasionally. I’ve not noticed any difference from my nylon skirts on a hot day.
I was…
thinking about leaving the tunnel loose on a hot day, as long as the water was flat. I think I will not regret getting the Glacier Trek in the long run. Thanks for all your advice and suggestions people.
first impression
Got the overall cag a few days ago and went for an hour+ walk with my woolies (same ones I normally wear under my dry suit) in this drenching and blowy nor’easter. Stayed warm, dry and the hood and visor kept the water out of my eyes. Good stuff, wind and waterproof. Can’t speak for the spray deck, but my guess is it’s a good bet.

True
I’m considering a Reed for my next sprayskirt. Just don’t have the experience to evaluate them yet.
I used…
my new Glacier Trek on Monday for the first time. I love it! It is so easy to get onto the combing, yet gives a nice tight deck and seal. The tunnel is very comfortable; I am glad I bought it and recommend it highly.
