That’s the ticket
or you ship it back to QCC in a sealed crate and there is some concealed damage.}
Well it was fine when it left my house…
Yep, just start saying you didn’t know
the damage was there then one day it just showed up and kept getting worse while your were “JPA” and keep posting about it here.
Then maybe you can ‘get a new one out of them’
Its happened before.
JPA = just paddling along or just pedaling along.

So, what did QCC say?
“Care Package” being sent to me for me
to try the repair myself. At least that’s the impression that I got from Phil last week. He assures me that I can do the repair myself.
They said they could repair it in about a half a day if I got it to them, but I don’t have the time or money to either drive it up or ship it to them right now.
If I botch the job too badly, I may try to get it to them later for a proper repair.
It may be a while until proper temperatures and my time availability synchronize for me to try the repair.
If all else fails, there’s always high quality waterproof and UV resistant duct tape that could be used, hehe.
What did they send you ?
… Just wondering.
I don’t know.
My discussions with Phil left me unsure of just what had been decided.
Road Trip
I have seen QCC’s repair work when a friend had a similar thing happen to his, and it was really top notch. However, there is a guy in northern IL that also does nice work on kayaks - D&S Marine in Roscoe (just north of Rockford, where I’m at). It’s still a drive for you but not as bad. Feel free to email me if I can help.
I taught myself how to do fiberglass work when I put a small hole in mine last summer, but I wasn’t going for a perfect looking repair since mine has some miles on it. Being at the end of the boat won’t make it any easier, but it sounds like you’ve been given some good advice. Check out some of the videos at jamestowndistributors.com - they helped me understand how all of this stuff works. I also bought my supplies from them and they came quickly but I’d hold off until it gets warmer outside.
Thanks for that suggestion.
That trip isn’t out of the question in the summer because we have friends in Freeport, IL and we enjoy exploring northwestern IL. We would be able to make an unhurried three day trip and enjoy some beautiful scenery at the same time.
More damage found on stern.
I inspected the stern a little more closely today and discovered that the gel coat is cracked along the side of the keel about a foot in from the end and the deck/hull seam accent stripe is cracked about two feet in from the end. The gel is not bonded to the cloth in the areas of the gel cracking - it can be flaked off.
Maybe I should just save up a couple hundred $ so I can ship it back to QCC for them to repair since the gel coat is thin along the last 6" of the sides of the stern and is transparent anyway - I can see dark lines through/in it. I was going to bring this thin gel on the stern to their attention before the boat got damaged by falling off of the rack. It’s beginning to look like I might have to strip off and re gel a couple square feet of the hull. I just don’t see how I could make it look good by doing it myself. I even question whether or not I could get the gel to bond well to the cloth.
Maybe I’ll just duct tape over the damaged areas and paddle it as is until it can get repaired properly.
Bummer.
Sorry to hear it, yanoer.
I know it must be frustrating. I share your woe, and you have heped me, I have moved my sea kayak to 1 foot off the floor.
For what it’s worth, I think people on here could help you a ton more if you’d take some photos and post them on picasa.com for free. Take about 8 minutes to set up a new acount a download 40 photos.
Chance for QCC to Shine
Maybe I am being overly optimistic but I have an idea. I am assuming you have already looked into how much it will cost to ship back to QCC .
That said, QCC could create a ton of goodwill and be able to display their ability with your kayak. A lot of people know your plight and are pulling for you and your kayak to be whole again. I for one would be impressed if they worked out a deal with you.
They may lose a little bit on one repair but stand to gain the respect of many on pnet. I knew I would like to have one at some point.
Take a ton of pictures and create a timeline to show later after they do the deal.
Good luck, I really do hope this goes well for you.
I was serious in an earlier post, I will mail you a few bucks to help, if many sent you a five spot you could be on your way.
I have my own small business and going back to help a customer even when it’s their fault has done wonders for referrals.
Dan
QCC Donated it in the first place…
As a give away and probably shipped it to the winner free. The ungrateful winner sold it on Ebay to yanoer who dropped it and broke it.
Where does customer service end when there is no customer?
Does QCC really need refferels?
Man, they make a good boat that they sell the heck out of.
As much of a bummer as it is his boat is damaged I can’t see where QCC is in any place beholden to this boat other than giving him advice on how to fix it, or have it shipped to them and they charge to fix it.
Told
you I was being overly optimistic. I thought he purchased the boat direct.
I think that grayhawk summed it up well.
QCC doesn’t really owe me anything, since they donated the boat to the p.net sweepstakes and I haven’t ever bought anything from them.
I stand by what I wrote long ago above
NOw that you’re paying to ship it back anyhow, QCC can deduct the price of this damaged boat from a new 600 model, which would serve you better in the long run, yanoer.
Keep us posted and pictured.
Why would a 600X serve me better?
A 10X might serve me better than a 600X.
The 400X may be the best boat for most of my paddling. I don’t have a clue, since I havn’t paddled it yet. I like to be able to relax when I’m in a boat and the reviews for the 600X suggest that that’s not always a good idea.
They don’t seem interested in a trade.
I still haven’t decided for sure to ship it back to them.
If shipping it or driving it to QCC
is not an option… Fix it yourself, or look in the yellow pages under marine repair or fiberglass. You may be able to get an autobody guy to do it on his off time too.
You mentiuoned the 600 first yanoer.
I didn’t even know abouyt the 600 until you mentioned it as perhaps better for you, and the 400 bette for your wifer, in an earlier thread.
TSC is right, to pay, I’d guess, $400 round trip to get that boat to QCC and back again would likely be all the copin you’d spend to have someone fix it locally.
I personally feel for you, as I know that mine will someday have that fate; they all do. If you post photos, perhaps bnystrom or onnopaddler could help you more.
By the way, Ryan at Geneva Kayaks not only runs a one day seminar for boat repairs, but he also does boat repairs for a fee.

COntact him (he’ll want photos, I’m certain).
G’luck and keep us all posted. And let’s hit the water this spirngtime. And get that one lively close up of you on the Salt blown up and framed. C ya. cooldoc1
