New Q400X fell off rack. Badly damaged

QCC is giving you a repair kit?
or selling you a repair kit?

For some reason
most of my post disappeared.

You also need to buy a Popsickle. Eat both halves so you have two sticks to use (grey PC-7 and white PC-8).

Stuff the seam split with PC-7. Smooth with a wet finger. Color it black with a Magic Marker.

Spread PC-8 onto the sanded gel coat damage. Smooth with two or three wet fingers. Sand smooth when cured.

Repairs will last the life of the boat.

Cracked gelcoat

– Last Updated: Feb-13-08 11:41 AM EST –

If figuring out how much gelcoat needs to go requires a video and expert study, you really need to reconsider living with composite boats or get a higher paid job. I am not being nasty. At some point the boat will take a hit when you are using it that'll leave you in a less extensive but pretty much similar situation to where you are now.

If a section of gelcoat comes off easily in your hand, it'll do the same on the water. That section gets removed.

If it seems to be staying put but there is a crack, get some spider crack stuff (I think McNett has some) and fill the cracks with that.

I have a small crack that probably goes thru to the glass on the side of my Explorer that showed up from sitting against a rock the third summer ago now. I stuck duct tape over it for the trip home to keep it dry, put in some of the spider crack stuff the next morning and covered it over with tenacious tape after the second round. One of these days I'll get around to digging the whole thing out and doing a proper job, but since it's been holding fine for two and a half years and I don't mind the likely totally unnecessary patch of tape, I don't feel like it's a rush.

I have also not done the finish sanding on my gelcoat repair last spring. The boat works fine.

chop sticks are handy items to have too
I take a couple chop sticks whenever I’m at the chinese takeaway. They are kind of handy for various stuff. I just used some over the weekend to spread Gorilla Glue.

Yanoer, I’ll help you fix it.
Let’s pick a sunny day and get the onnopaddler input and the fixing gel from QCC and I will help you. Perhaps together we can figure it out and get a grip on it.

Official notice:
I am retiring from this thread.

Jim

Its been fun.

Yanoer
See my thread on kayak transport. I don’t know if it helps at all or if it’s even realistic. I was thinking of your plight and smoke started coming out my ears…

Repair game plan in place.
I’ll do a temporary repair as soon as weather allows so that I can paddle in the near future and then I’ll drive it up to QCC sometime in May or June for professional repair and take a little vacation in the beautiful scenery in that part of Wisconsin. I want it to be warm enough for my wife to enjoy being outdoors. I’ve never been north of Madison. My wife and I didn’t go on any vacation last year, so we’re due for one anyway. I’ll schedule the repair with QCC so that I can drop it off one day and pick it up a day or two later. It was too expensive to ship it.

They’re sending black gel for the seam and white for the hull. I’ll pick up the hardener and a few other needed items locally. Phil explained the process to me yesterday and my part (the temporary repair) should be pretty simple and straight forward and allow me to try the boat out a month or two sooner than if I waited for their professional repair in May or June before paddling it.

CD1, Thanks for your offer to help. I’ll give you a call when I plan to do the gel work so that I can supply a little humor in your day while you watch. If you’re not available when I go to do the repair, I’m pretty sure that I can manage the job myself.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice and encouragement in the above posts.

What did they tell you for ‘temp’ repair
s vs. them doing ‘real’ ones down he road … just curious.

I think you do care about this boat and wondering why you do not call or email me about this matter. I would not care except you keep posting on paddling.net as if you expect everyone else to be concerned as much as you and I do about your boat. Trust me, i can help and save your $$$.

Hang in there, yanoer.
