Offset paddles

I guess with today’s low or zero offset
blades, it doesn’t matter. But I just checked with my bent-shaft 75 degree paddle, and there is no way to make my left hand a true control hand when the blade is in the water on the left side. Assist, yes, but not control. The right hand maintains grip on the shaft at all times. It never releases the shaft as would have to be the case if the left hand were the “control” hand at that time. If it did release, then the right hand would be releasing position on the bentshaft grip, a risky proposition.



If you are paddling with a low or zero offset paddle, then there is much less concern about the “off” hand temporarily becoming the control hand, because the other hand is not going to move much at all if its grip relaxes.
