Old Man Paddling

At 73, I am getting out of canoeing. My balance is not as good. I like drift boats now but easier water. Planning on some guided raft trips with some younger guys doing most of the work. Never stop going out there.

Hey @JSCOTTCLARK Thank you for sharing your experience. It Is inspiring to hear :slightly_smiling_face: that you are still paddling regularly at 79.

When you say you wear an inflatable, can you give examples? I have a waist inflatable that I used to wear on my sup, but that doesn’t seem right for kayaking. Recreational pond and lake paddling only.

There are many inflatable full pfd’s on the market, from $65 up. Google them and you will find so many. I added a crotch strap to mine so I would not have to wear it belted tightly yet it still could not float up in front of my face if it inflated. It is much cooler in hot weather.

I’ll be 76 on September 1 and I’m picking up a new boat this morning . I’ve been doubting my sanity but this discussion has made me feel better.

Seems like an auto-inflating would keep you from being able to jump off and swim, and a manual wouldn’t do much good if you were unconscious.

I love this topic because I’m 65 and just started easy recreational kayaking, as a complement to my recreational biking. I hope to be doing both for decades. Anything is better than nothing. Love the pool noodle idea!
