One-Person Tent - Kayak Camping

Do not get the Quarter Dome T1
Just saw this thread. The 2-man tent is fine. The 1-man tent will give you a foretaste of the afterlife–what it will be like to be stuffed into a pine box. I swear someone threw down a Thermarest, drew a line around it, and said “Build a tent here”. I picked one up at a used gear sale because the price was right. Let me tell you, no price justifies that thing. Chodups, with whom I went camping, says there’s an intended use for everything. Well, he may be right. I suppose this would work well for children going solo, midgets, or anorexic models. But don’t try to bring any gear in with you, there’s no room.

Clark NX-250 Hammock is glorious!
I had a full season in mine last year and never sleep better outdoors, or at home for that matter. At the South Bass Island Rendezvous last year we had a storm roll in on Saturday night with a good wind and rain on the leading edge. The Hennessey boys were running for their cars while I stayed high, dry, and rocking the night away. It can be used on the ground (has carbon poles to keep the ceiling open), or hang it. It is highly weatherproof, well made, and comfortable as hell. For this you pay a little more, but in my opinion it is money well spent. I look forward to my first night in it at the Hugh Heward Challenge. Bill

What about…
Dryad tents from terrelogic? Those look pretty sweet…

Too late - already ordered
As stated earlier in the thread, I have two two-person tents. I wanted another option. And I’m barely 5’3" so the small size will not be as big a problem for me as for those nearly a foot taller. After I’ve used it some time this summer, I promise I’ll report back.

Do you really have a space problem??

Kayaking isn't backpacking. You should have plenty of space for a two-person tent, no? Backpacking involves some suffering by definition. Kayaking by comparison is supposed to be luxurious. I would never subject myself to a one-person tent while kayaking.

Here are my recommendations for wonderful "top threes":

1. REI Half Dome tent, $100. Roomy, totally weatherproof, very easy to get in and out of, CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP.

2. LL Bean 35-degree down semirectangualr sleeping bag, currently on sale for the unbeatable price of $135 with free shipping. http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/48813?pi=851237&bv=product-_-1138-_-RLP-_-I-242129-_-productname_link&qs=3000086

3. Having saved on those two items, you can now afford to splurge on an Exped Synmat 7 wide air mattress. Heavenly.

Black Diamond Ahwanhnee
Great single person expedition tent–tight for two, luxurious for one, packs small, 4 pounds, bombproof, screen opens for great views and ventilation. 30 days on SE coast of Newfoundland in great to miserable weather with steady winds at 45, gusts to 60-70. No problems, where two North Face tents leaked, fly blew off, seams split, trouble setting up. To set up the Ahwanhnee, you get inside the tent with the poles and expand from inside–much easier when raining and blowing. Only downside is price, but …so much better.

Hammock!
I use my Hennessey Hammock as much as possible. There are times that the gulf doesn’t offer any trees to hang from, so I set it up on the ground and use my paddle as poles. It’s tiny, light weight, and very comfortable. IT eliminates the need for a pad so it saves even more space and weight. Leaving more room for the other goodies!

Blackbird is ideal, comes with all straps, better tha Hennessey (I own both) and the guy in this video above makes them.

Cheers.

Tight!
I asked bowrudder if I could get in his tent to see what it was like. He quoted me correctly that there is use for everything but that puppy is tight. Reminded me of an MRI or two that I have gotten through.

I am very conscious of the packing size of gear but, for me, that one tipped past the point of diminishing returns.

Maybe bike camping?

HUBBA!!!
Love the hubba!!! light, perfect, good in wind with added tie-downs, very very quick to set up and take down…

end of story

Pretty neat… But I must say,
I love my ENO Double Nest with the “slap straps” http://www.eaglesnestoutfittersinc.com/ when I use a hammock!!!

Another that I use for “super-light-weight” is my Moskito http://www.byerofmaine.com/products/amazonas/the-moskito-traveller.html with the micro rope http://www.byerofmaine.com/products/amazonas/microrope.html (I made mine out of 550 & acouple pieces of aluminum rod.) Total package is 1lb 1.2oz !!!

I always carry my 12x12 sil-nylon tarp

ENO and esp SlapStraps
will get laughed off hammock forums. Slap straps stretch. Not for camping. Seriolusly. I have some, they’re right on HF. The HF guys study this stuff like it’s Shakespeare or something.

I don’t think I’ve disagreed with you on any subject I’ve ever seen you post about on Pnet, ever! Are you my long lost twin seed?

Seriously, dude, we agree on everything.
