Clear duct tape (3m brand only)
may look better. Also the big box builders supply stores have duct tape in various colors, one may be a match for your canoe.
U-Haul
or similiar type stores have those large plastic rolls similiar to cling wrap on a single handle designed to wrap around and cling to household goods. Might be an idea to look into for a temporary solution…

Not the Clear … Not even by 3M.
The clear becomes a gummy mess pretty easily and quickly.
Black duct tape seems to weather best and therefore do the best job overall. Stick with 3M for best results … except …
For real super stick the new Gorilla duct tape is super duty. It is the best, and most expensive I have seen ($12 plus a roll). I have even had it stick and hold in the rain! BUT it does goo, get gummy, a bit. It can also be hard to get off. This is the stuff you want to take on wilderness trips for those real important repair jobs. AND is super for use as bomb proof bandages!

gaffers tape
gaffers tape leaves very little residue, about as strong as duct tape, but not as strong as the Gorilla tape
