Paddling hat?

Chinese Coolie Hat
Completely useless in any thing stronger than a breeze. but like wearing a tent as you go, comfortable and look cool as hell! Think chinese peasant paddling the ocean!

Stiff brims

I love my Tilleys (thats right, I have two) but the brim will fold back in 20 kt winds. It gets stiffer when soaked with water, but not stiff enough.

I believe REI has several versions of ball caps with capes attached. But most capes do not wrap around under your chin. I will do some research.

Here ya go.

And another:

Thanks for the research
I had found a couple of drape caps online. But since I could not get one locally I thought it might be a time to change my look and go with something Tilley-like.

I do like the looks of the 2 drape caps you found. If I decided not to change my look I think one of those 2 will be the choice.

Thanks for your effort.

I have one of the OR caps

and it works well for a sunshade, but the Tilleys are cooler feeling since the nape of your neck is more exposed. The Tilleys so far have kept me from getting burned, even from reflected sunlight.

Either works well.

Many years ago there was a company named Sequel that made brom hats and caps with mylar panels in the very top. Worked great for hot days, and the caps had the full wrap-around capes. I believe they ceased production rather than switch from domestic to offshore sewing.

Jim

Yep. As I remembered.

And made in the USA!
I think I’ll buy one!

Nice paddle Redmond

For those non-floppy hat days…

Great wet (all poly) and definitely hard to miss. Good for fitness types (paddling/cycling/running), and anyone dealing with boat/car traffic…

For floppy hat days I wear a boonie from the surplus store.

Epic makes a good hat, too
Epic Kayaks makes a nice cap. It has mesh sides, reflective striping, and a built-in clip. See

My only complaint is that it offers no sun protection for the ears and neck - it’s just a cap.

David

Cheaper than a Tilley
and has a sun drape in the back that stores in the back brim when not in use. Light weight, comfortable, the breeze through the mesh is nice.

Call the fashion police!
A tilley with a bandanna wedged under the brim is classier looking than that!

Jim

dashingly handsome in a Tilley

Good Heavens!
Dork city. Zorro might like it.

Another jim, who is never handsome, but loves his Tilley.

Hey,
its so ugly that my dog tried to bury it. But man, its going to be nice when the sun is beating down on my neck out on the lake. My fashionable T4 had a blow-out just above the band in front and I have to send it back for a replacement.

Why aren’t you using duct tape to fix it
?

Dogmaticus

Please see the picture
linked in the “If Tilley is goofier …” response early in this thread. Despite having used duct tape to repair that hat, this time I was trying to select some attire so as to appear a little less stupid for some of the upcoming group trips.

If it comes down to it I do have some brand new duct tape that I could use if I have too. Maybe I can cut it into some interesting pattern so it will look like a hat band.

Mark

I think you have an idea in the making,
the civilized Texans duct tape hat. I might buy in to your new venture.

Dogmaticus

Tilleys are kinda pricey in my book.
I pick up those cheap camo jungle aussie style hats from a local flea market for $2.00 to #3.00 or even less. Big brim, chin strap, bandana’s if needed. (Ive even used t shits tied around my head in an emergency - looks funny but I don’t care) if the hat lasts the season, I can afford to lose it.

I bet shits tied around your head
keep the sun off;probably not flies though.

yes they are but worth it

Tilly will replace the hat if you lose it. I've got three---two summer and one winter for dress occasions---its what happens when you marry a canadian eh?

That Tilley winter hat is great!
In light rain, snow, or just cold wind. Reminds me - I hope the moths aren’t eating it. I better check.

Good Comment Clarion
Clarion, You made me laugh out loud with your comments obout how goofy Tilley Hats are. Thanks for that.
