stealing water
During the dry season in the everglades (winter) the racoons seem to be much more interested in water than food. There are plenty of oysters and crabs for them to eat, but fresh water gets pretty scarce. They seem to have figured out where the drain plug is on ice chests, and open that and lap up the meltwater. As other posters have noted, they are happy to do this in the beam of a light 5 feet from your tent. I have never had a water bottle or container opened, but the coller trick happens routinely.
I’ve heard out on
Pavillon Key they have mastered zippered tents , Rangers have been cautioning folks goin out there this past winter . Alot of the time you’ll find yer yak covered with their ft. prints , they are searchin for food but also lickin the dew off the yak . ----M

If you set your beer down around the campfire they will sneak up and try to take it...
Footprints all around your boat, every boat...
Ha Ha…BEER
Ha Ha, so true!
That was one of the things they did.
We had several beer cans with a few drops in them in the hung garbage bag and that night we heard cans being chomped. Little thieves bit thru the empty aluminum cans to get to the few drops left after they got the garbage bag down.
